Description
Introduction In recent decades, the classical form of area studies based on the notion of culture-language areas has been critiqued from several directions. The origins of Asian area studies in the post-World War II carve up of the planet between competing Soviet and American empires has made the enterprise politically suspect, especially in cultural studies circles. With their analytical sights set on intensifying cross-border flows of finance, information, and people, globalization theorists have questioned the geographical isolation and distinctiveness of the different cultures that area studies sought to understand. Deconstructionists draw upon poststructuralist theories of the inter-dependence of discursively constituted "selves" and excluded "others", and the mutual definition of hegemonic centres and marginalized peripheries, and have criticized area studies for a pervasive cultural essentialism. Together, these influences have led to a thorough rethinking of spatiality in which the types of difference that are considered to matter theoretically are now commonly viewed as being independent of geography.
